2007: Year of the Dolphin
2007 is being observed by the UN Environment Programme (Convention on Migratory Species) together with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society and German tourist group, TUI, as Year of the Dolphin; by the World Meteorological Organisation and the International Council for Science as International Polar Year; and by the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs as International Heliophysical Year.
Individuals and groups can help to make these Years much more effective through meditation and prayer. Click here for a meditation in support of the Year of the Dolphin.
A special bond between human beings and the Dolphin
Wild dolphins are intrinsically tied to our cultural history and awareness. Living in the world’s oceans and rivers, they are a living treasure of our blue planet. Surely dolphins represent one of the most beloved of all creatures. They have for centuries swum through the inner life of humans in dreams, mythology, literature and art.
Yet Dolphins are Under Threat
The health of many of the world’s dolphin populations are threatened by by catch, pollution, habitat destruction, over-fishing and climate change. A Strong Aliance to Protect Dolphins
The United Nations, Governments, intergovernmental organizations, NGOs and the private sector, namely TUI, are building a strong alliance to achieve a common objective: to protect wild dolphins and create an ocean home that is safe from harm. A crucial factor in achieving this is education to create awareness of dolphin species, educate, inform decision makers and involve local communities. Therefore, the Year of the Dolphin will be part of the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development. The campaign is also a tangible contribution towards meeting targets to reduce the loss of wildlife by 2010, which all Governments have agreed through the UN.
